Bullying at schools: a worrying trend throughout the country

Many learners from schools across different communities in South Africa have been involved in bullying or gang-related fights and this behaviour hit close to home after a case of assault was lodged with the Eldorado Park Police Station after an alleged assault that took place at the Moses Marena Secondary School.

Three officers attended to the complaint at the school which was the scene of a service delivery protest.

A spokesperson for the South African Police Services said, “Upon our arrival, we discovered that there was no service delivery protest, but an assault case.

“The suspect, a 16-year-old boy, had assaulted another learner at the school who is 18 years old, by stabbing him.

According to the spokesperson, October 5, the same suspect was involved in another stabbing where he assaulted another learner and in June this year, he allegedly assaulted a teacher with a brick.

He was taken to the Eldorado Park Police Station and his parents were informed of his misdeeds by police. According to the Eldorado Park SAPS, other cases of assault in the community also dealt with learners.

In one incident, a 44-year-old man was arrested for sexually assaulting a 13-year-old learner from Olifantsvlei Primary School.

His role in the story is that he was the bus driver responsible for transporting the learners to school.

It is alleged that on October 13, the suspect touched the victim on her buttocks and told her that he loved her. It is further alleged that he repeated the same act on October 16.

The victim reported the matter to her teacher on October 17 who reported the alleged sexual misconduct to police. The man was detained at the Eldorado Park SAPS holding cells.

The Eldorado Park police spokesperson said, “We’re expecting more learners to come forward.”
