WATCH: BrainBoosters targets 1 million ECD centres through its programme

BrainBooster operations manager, Lizanne Van Wyk.

In an effort to address and eradicate poor teaching methodologies in townships and rural day care centres, BrainBoosters and Young Voice Academy (YOVA) joined hands to reach out to one million Early Childhood Development (ECD) centres with their Play and Learn Methodology.

According to Lizanne Van Wyk BrainBoosters operations manager, they want to give daycare centre principals training and resources to be used in their respective centres.

“We should start building the education foundation of children from the age of one to five years old, the government is leaving it until it is too late,” said Van Wyk.

She said YOVA brought 30 principals and teachers to their centre in Roodepoort to be trained in the application of their Play and Learn Light Training programme and their range of educational products.

Van Wyk applauded the role played by YOVA on the ground in their role in implementing the programme and getting ECD centres involved. Daycare centres had an opportunity of taking part in a one-day training programme offered by BrainBoosters.

“South African ECD centres must learn that they do not need to just feed young children from 1-5 years food, but they also need to feed their brains. We have various products available for these young learners and daycare centres. Our programme is simple and even the aged who cannot understand or read English can easily apply our methodology because it is picture driven,” said Van Wyk.

She said they are trying to reach out to one million South African daycare centres. They want to lay a good foundation for young learner’s life so that they can break the chains of poverty.

She said they want young people to go out to be part of the education system and not to fall by the wayside because they feel they are not good enough.

Van Wyk said if township day care centres could be given their educational material, young township learners could compete on an equal footing with their peers further north.

YOVA assistant director, Thato Phiri said they were looking forward to seeing the Play and Learn Light Training methodology being implemented in most ECD centres across the country in the near future.

He said they were excited that they managed to bring 30 daycare centres, principals and teachers for the initial training.

“One teacher can impart knowledge gained in this training to over 50 learners in the townships. That means that, through this training, we will touch about 1500 township learners, which is a great start.

“With this partnership, we promise to bring about 50 daycare centre teachers for training each month over the next 12 months. That means, in 12 months we will touch about 30 000 learners in Soweto,” said Phiri.

Joyce Kubjana from Dipalesa Tsa Borwa Day Care in Bramficherville Phase Four and Rebecca Manyathela from Dr Mary Malahlela Primary School in Dobsonville agreed, “Children learn through play because they are actively involved. The programme is more learner-centred than teacher centred.”
