Reading is a fundamental skill, in fact, it is one of the most important tools you need to be anything you want to be in life. Florence Steenkamp, who runs a feeding scheme in Eldorado Park has recently decided to incorporate reading as part of helping children in need.
“I want to do more than feed them, I want to teach them long lasting tools because reading is so important,” said Steenkamp.
Steenkamp said that when the children arrive to collect their food, they are eager to stay and play in her yard, “I decided to keep them busy during these holidays by starting a reading club,” she said.

She added that many of the youngsters were willing and eager to read and those who cannot read sit quietly and listen to the older children reading to them.
“Seeing the willingness these children have to help one another really warms my heart, I have such a soft spot for them, I enjoy having them around. Sometimes children wander into my yard after their reading sessions and they ask me if they could read some more,” she said.
Steenkamp’s reading classes are from 9 am to 11 am, the children are then released to play and lunch is served around 1 pm.
